Tyne Tunnels

The first Tyne Tunnel was completed in 1967 and the second in 2011, after which the 1967 tunnel was comprehensively refurbished to include a new evacuation tunnel and the latest safety standards. Today, the twin tunnels provide a vital transport link, carrying the A19 trunk road under the Tyne River in North East England. Around 36,000 vehicles use the twin tunnels every day, a figure which is expected to rise to 43,000 by 2021.
